Welcome to the Literacy Experience:

I am, Shonita Alford, a Creative, Colorful Catalyst for Positive Change! I am a native Georgia Peach and a resident Charlotte Queen. I am an enthusiastic reader, an avid traveler and a wacky wordsmith. I am a teacher by profession and a Carolina Panther fan by choice.

As the Director of The Literacy Experience, I work to promote literacy within the United States and Puerto Rico. This is accomplished by creating community programs to improve communication and English-language skills, providing targeted instruction to bridge literacy gaps, educating families in literacy practices and providing needed print resources to communities in areas where print resources are not available.

The great abolitionist and orator, Frederick Douglass, is quoted as saying, “once you learn to read, you will forever be free.” I believe that education is the key to freedom- freedom to dream, to explore new horizons, or to see yourself through a more positive lens. Education offers options for greater possibilities for you, your family, and your entire community.
